A letter to my granddaughter …
Darling Cadence,
As we began the dog days of summer, you began your journey on this earth. My precious little granddaughter, you arrived Monday, June 27, 5:01 a.m. at breakneck speed. At 7 pounds, 3 ounces and 20 inches and a no-nonsense, here I am energy, you were guided by Sirius the Dog Star, the brightest star in the summer night sky, into an extended family of love.
You are already so loved by so many. Should you ever forget the joy that you are, just look into the night sky where the constellations continue their celebration of your birth.
The Brightest Star
a poem for Cadence, the brightest star of all
On the night you were born, all the heavens were bright
And in every dark corner, they lit up the night.
The brightest star, Sirius, was leading your way
As you took you first breath on your precious first day.
Old Sirius Dog Star lit up the night sky
While he told of your story to all that came by
The hunter Orion took stars from his belt
Which grew bigger and brighter with love that he felt.
Cygnus the swan held his slender neck high
Calling his swan song to echo your cry
And he carried the news to the whole Milky Way
“The brightest star, Cadence, has joined us today.”
Ursa Major and minor, great bear and her son
Embraced with the news that such love had begun
Aquila the eagle soared high and above
As he circled the night on his starred wings of love.
The heart of the Scorpius turned red on that night
His tail lost its sting and gained three stars so bright
Celestial strongman, the brave Hercules
Was so filled with emotion, he fell to his knees.
All the stars in the night sky looked down from on high
And they twinkled and danced as you gave your first cry
To the sound of your name, which means rhythm and rhyme
A flowing of harmony, a dance for all time.
As they danced and rejoiced to the sound of your name
Lyra the harp played the sweetest refrain
The Milky Way glowed with celestial tune
And the whole solar system lit up in that June.
Whenever you doubt just how special you are
look up in the night sky and find the Dog Star
For wherever you travel across this great earth
The stars tell the story of your precious birth.
Each bright constellation looks down on your face
Outshone by your sweetness, your beauty and grace
Their dancing continues, their message is clear
It will always be brightest this night of the year.
Keep shining your light; you are forever loved.
