COLONIE — In one of the most exciting games of this upside down fall season, the Guilderland field hockey team beat Shaker in a sudden death shoot to advance to the semifinals against Shen.
The game was scoreless at the half but Shaker jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third quarter on a goal by Kate Musser. Guilderland’s Sophia Sericolo tied it up before the quarter ended and the game remained knotted at 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Unlike regular season games this fall, the Suburban Council quarterfinals did not end in a tie, and we went to overtime under the lights at Afrims Sport Park.
Neither team scored after the only OT period so it came down to a shootout with Devin Testo in net for Shaker and Bianca Simeone for Guilderland.
Each goalie was superb through the entire game and that carried over to the first shoot out with each stopping all five shots sending the game to a sudden death shoot out.
Simeone stopped the first Shaker attempt and Sericolo got the team’s first attempt by Testo for the win.
Guilderland will play the No. 1 seed from Shen on Wednesday.
