COLONIE—Colonie Central High School’s spring production of “Mary Poppins” has earned four nominations in the 2025 High School Musical Theatre Awards, including a coveted slot to perform at the upcoming awards ceremony at Proctors Theatre.
The school received nominations for Outstanding Musical in Tier A, Outstanding Lead Performer, Outstanding Supporting Performer, and Outstanding Choreography Execution.
This year marks Colonie’s debut in Tier A competition, which includes some of the largest high schools in the Capital Region. Among 21 participating schools, Colonie is one of just nine selected to perform during the ceremony scheduled for Saturday, May 10, in Schenectady.
Senior Cameron Froehlich was nominated for Outstanding Lead Performer for his role as Bert, while Mason Calarco was recognized as Outstanding Supporting Performer for his portrayal of Michael Banks. The show’s choreography was also acknowledged, highlighting the precision and energy behind the production’s dance sequences.
“This is a huge honor for our program,” said Sue Vatalaro, line ‘n cue advisor and co-producer/director. “To see our students recognized at this level is incredibly rewarding.
“We are especially excited for our nomination for Outstanding Choreography,” Vatalaro added. “Christine Meglino is a remarkable choreographer and to have her efforts recognized along with our talented dancers is very important to all of us in our program. These nominations represent months of hard work, collaboration, and creativity from everyone involved.”
Colonie Central has now been nominated for Outstanding Musical four years in a row. Last year, the school won Best Musical in Tier B, a category based on program size and level of production. This year’s advancement to Tier A reflects the growth of the school’s theater program and its ongoing commitment to excellence in performance.
The High School Musical Theatre Awards, hosted annually at Proctors, celebrate student achievement in theatrical production across the Capital Region. The event serves as a regional feeder into the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, also known as the Jimmy Awards, held in New York City.
