Award-winning comedian, actor and producer Steven Wright this Saturday in the Hart Theatre at The Egg beginning at 8 p.m.
Raised in Burlington, Massachusetts, Wright is a prototype comedian that many others continually try to follow. After graduating from Emerson College and holding a bevy of odd jobs, Wright attended an “open mike” audition and became a regular performer at Ding Ho’s Comedy Club and Chinese Restaurant in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
During that time, Wright was booked for his first “Tonight Show” appearance on Aug. 6, 1982. Johnny Carson, the King of Late Night, enjoyed his performance so much that he invited Wright to appear again the following Thursday, pushing his fledgling career into high gear. The comic soon found himself performing his off-beat routines on “Saturday Night Live,” and “Late Night with David Letterman,” in addition to making numerous trips back to “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.”
Within the next couple of years, Wright expanded his career to not only include comedy albums but film and television appearances as well. Both his debut and follow-up albums, “I Have A Pony,” released in 1985, and “I Still Have A Pony,” released in 2007, earned him Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Album. In 1989, Wright starred in and co-wrote a short film titled “The Appointments of Dennis Jennings,” which received an Academy Award for Best Short Film. Since then, Wright has appeared in a number of films with well-known actors, such as John Cleese and Mike Meyers, in addition to writing, directing and starring in his own films. In 2014, Wright was nominated for an Emmy Award as a producer for the hit FX series, “Louie” and can be seen in Louis CK’s critically-acclaimed new web series, “Horace and Pete.”
Currently, Wright regularly performs on popular late night shows and continues to tour both at home and abroad.
