Ken Dagostino’s return to Mohonasen didn’t go well for he and the Colonie boys basketball team.
Mohonasen (3-5 league, 4-7 overall) went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter and held off Colonie the rest of the way for a 49-41 Suburban Council victory Friday, Jan. 9, in Rotterdam.
Dagostino — who coached at Mohonasen before moving to Colonie this season — said he had mixed emotions about how the game turned out.
“One part of me is proud because I saw what we left at Mohonasen,” said Dagostino. “The other half of me is saying we have a lot of work to do at Colonie.”
The Garnet Raiders (3-5, 4-6) suffered a setback when John Fouracre left the game in the first quarter with an injury. Then, leading scorer Nolan Smith sat out the majority of the third quarter after picking up his fourth personal foul less than three minutes into the period. In both cases, Mohonasen took advantage of Colonie’s misfortune to build huge leads.
“Nolan getting the fouls and Jack Fouracre going out in the first four minutes of the game didn’t help us,” said Dagostino.
Smith finished the night with 19 points, while Bryce Waterman contributed nine points and Josh Paszkowski added eight points for Colonie. Ryan Carter netted 14 points, and Steven Clemins chipped in with 10 points for Mohonasen, which ended a three-game losing streak.
After hosting Bethlehem Tuesday, Jan. 13, Colonie faces Niskayuna Friday, Jan. 16, in a Suburban Council contest.
Girls basketball
Meanwhile, the Colonie girls basketball team moved back to the .500 mark in the Suburban Council with a 60-30 home win against Mohonasen Friday, Jan. 9. The Lady Raiders (4-4, 6-5) broke the game open by outscoring the Mighty Warriors (1-7, 2-8) 32-13 over the course of the second and third quarters.
Colonie’s two Aliyahs paved the way for the Lady Raiders’ third consecutive victory. Aliyah Wright had 18 points, and Aliyah Massaconi added 10 points. Five more Colonie players scored at least five points in the 30-point victory.
Saaeda Abdul-Aziz paced Mohonasen with 20 points.
