Jordan and Jake Johnson made their last Eddy Meet together special.
Jordan, who is graduating from Colonie Central High School in June, won the boys two mile invitational, while younger brother Jake claimed the boys one mile invitational title at the 74th edition of the Eddy Meet Saturday, May 17, at Schenectady High School.
“It means a lot because he’s my best friend, and he’s going off to college,” said Jake, a sophomore. “I’m bummed about it. He’s my motivator. We push each other constantly.”
Jordan had little trouble winning the two mile race. The Stony Brook University-bound distance runner set the early pace and fended off a challenge from Duanesburg’s Patrick Murphy to finish first with a time of 9:36.16.
“I was feeling good going out,” said Jordan. “Two miles is a long race, so I knew I wanted to take it out quickly and then get into a good groove. I was a bit surprised the Murphy kid kept pace as long as he did.”
Jake faced a tougher challenge in the one mile race. With Guilderland’s freshman sensation, Noah Carey, not far behind him, Jake pushed through the finish line with a winning time of 4:19.39. Carey was second with a time of 4:21.62.
“I’m very happy to get the trophy,” said Jake. “I’m not satisfied with the 4:19 I ran. I feel I can run faster than that.”
The Johnsons were two of the three Colonie track athletes to win Eddy Meet trophies Saturday. Girls pole vaulter Kara Snyder finished first by clearing the bar at 11 feet, 6 inches.
Shaker had a pair of individual champions at the Eddy Meet. Lloyd Smalling won the boys 100-meter dash final with a time of 11.01 seconds, and Maryanna Lansing claimed the girls unseeded 1,500-meter championship with a time of 4:51.51.
