ROTTERDAM — The Bethlehem girls lacrosse team is the Section II Class A champs for the first time since 2006

The Eagles pulled away from Shenendehowa on Wednesday, May 22 to beat the No. 1 seed 15-12 at Mohonasen High School.

Bethlehem was down 7-6 at the half, but came back strong in the second, which included a 5-0 run, to outscore Shen 9-5.

Avery Jones had five goals and an assist for The Eagles while Caroline Wise had three goals and three assists and Lindsay Ayers had three goals and two assists. Lauren Riker had two goals, Amanda Koch had a goal and an assist and Ashlynn McGrath had a goal.

Sophia Koch had 10 saves in goal for Bethlehem.

McKenzie Ballard had four goals for Shen while Grace Palowodzinski had three. Despite having the best regular season record at the end of the season, Bethlehem was ranked in the No. 2 spot heading into the tournament and it took overtime to get by the tough No. 3 Saratoga team to make it to the finals.

Bethlehem will represent Section II in the state tournament and will play the winner of North Rockland, of Section I, and Monroe Woodbury, of Section IX, on May 31 at Mohonasen High School. Section II got a first round bye this year.
