New York State Police in Wilton arrested Joseph Bruno, age 29, of Gansevoort today on the charge of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor. Bruno is a math teacher at Maple Avenue Middle School, Saratoga Springs City School District. It is alleged that Bruno subjected a 14-year-old female student to unwanted and inappropriate physical contact while repeatedly attempting to engage her in a sexual conversation.
The alleged offense occurred on Monday, May 14, in a classroom at the school after regular school hours. A report was made to State Police on Tuesday. Bruno was placed on administrative leave by the school district on Wednesday morning.
Bruno was arraigned in Wilton Town Court, released on his own recognizance, and is scheduled to appear on May 22 in Greenfield Town Court. No further information was available from police.
A statement released by the Saratoga Springs City School District follows:
`The District takes these charges very seriously and responds appropriately to ensure the safety, health and welfare of the students while mindful of the rights of employees.
`Mr. Bruno has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. In addition, the district is complying with Commissioners Regulations related to employee conduct. The district will continue its investigation into the allegations and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement in this matter. The district will have no further comment. The matter is being handled by the Saratoga County District Attorney’s Office.`
