The calendar says it’s been spring for almost a week, but Mother Nature has other plans. The Capital Region faces more wintery weather with another possible dumping of snow throughout the night on Thursday.
That means come Friday morning, students around Saratoga County may or may not find themselves bundling up for school.
We’re just waiting to see what happens tomorrow, said Maureen Dana, spokesperson for the Saratoga Springs City School District.
Saratoga Springs is already one day over the number allotted each school year for school closure. The district has used five snow days so far. To make up for that day, a Superintendent’s Conference Day is schedule d for June 27, meaning students still won’t have to attend.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake School District and Ballston Spa Central School District both work the school calendar around 186 days. Since the state requires students to complete 180 days of instruction a year, those six additional days help the district avoid problems.
`We always have 186 to give ourselves a little flexibility,` said Christy Multer, communications for BHBL.
BHBL has used four snow days so far and Multer said the superintendent won’t make a decision on a possible Friday snow day until 5 a.m. that morning.
`Having seen many of his counterparts be burned before, he doesn’t make the decision in advance because if you think about our region, a storm can come through and if it turns 50 miles further north or south, it may or may not hit us,` said Multer.
Ballston Spa has also used four of its six allotted snow days.
`It depends on the district; some call them snow days, we just use them for emergency closings or conference days,` said Stuart Williams, community relations coordinator for the district.
Shenendehowa Central School District schedules five days into the calendar for snow days and has used three so far, according to the district.
According to the National Weather Service, a winter storm warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Thursday until 1 a.m. Saturday. Accumulations of 6 to 12 inches of snow are being projected across the region. A wintery mix is set to begin in the evening and become heavy at times overnight, with snow and wind gusts up to 30 mph through Friday.“
