Within many communities lies a facility that provides health and fitness, teen programs, childcare and wellness programs, and that is just to name a few. This facility is your local YMCA and in Glenville, residents will be enjoying a two-phase expansion plan that will provide members with a state-of-the-art facility.
Celebrating its 37th year, the Glenville branch is in phase one of its expansions. On Wednesday, June 27, YMCA staff and members celebrated the groundbreaking for phase one. This phase will include a $500,000 addition that will result ion 4,600 new square feet.
Glenville Executive Director John Reilly said the addition would be home to 47 new pieces of exercise equipment that will be usable for adults, seniors, and youths.
The ceremony was a great way for people in the community to actually see where the money is going to go, said Reilly.
The project has been made possible through many local volunteers who worked together in the design, fundraising and future construction process.
The $500,000 raised for the project is from a combination of donations and grants. Some of the capital resources include campaign donations totaling $110,000; $12,000 came with assistance from state Assembly Minority Leader James Tedesco, R-Schenectady, and $25,000 is from the Lillian Slater Trust.
`We thank everyone who has been involved. I would like to encourage everyone who has contributed to the expansion efforts and I would like to encourage the rest for the people and the communities we serve in the area to join us in making the Greater Glenville YMCA an even greater YMCA,` said President and CEO David Brown.
Phase two of the project is a teen facility resource that will benefit the Glenville branch’s 6,000 members. Officials believe this membership number will increase with the `new Y’s` ability to serve more people.
`A YMCA in many cases also serves as a community center and has many of the area’s social functions. We like the activity, we like being part of the community,` said Brown.
The Capital District YMCA is a non-profit charitable association that serves children, families and seniors. It is the area’s largest health, fitness and wellness membership organization with annual revenue of $25.3 million,
The Capital Region YMCA has more than 65,000 members extending from Albany to Lake George. The sites offer childcare sites, day camps, summers camps and retreats.
