The season came to an end for three area boys basketball teams last weekend.
Mohonasen and Scotia-Glenville lost their class A quarterfinal games Sunday, while Schalmont fell in the class B quarterfinals Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College.
Mohonasen faced a familiar opponent in Averill Park Sunday, and the result was the same as their two Suburban Council meetings this season with Averill Park beating Mohonasen 45-39.
We played them twice already so I think we were used to them,` said Mohonasen coach Ken Dagostino. `We didn’t get enough ball movement, and we really didn’t have anyone around the perimeter that was going to knock (long-range shots) down.`
Mohonasen (12-10) had several chances to get back in the game after being down by 11 points late in the third quarter. Anthony DeSousa and Pat Barnes each made two free throws, and Cameron Couball completed a three-point play to cut Averill Park’s lead to 37-34.
After Couball missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game, Ryan Reagan made four free throws to extend Averill Park’s advantage to 41-34, and the Warriors (12-9) never looked back.
Couball led Mohonasen with 13 points, but the team struggled from the field as a whole. The Mighty Warriors made only 11 of their 42 shots ` a .262 shooting percentage.
Barnes contributed seven points and 13 rebounds in his final basketball game at Mohonasen. Barnes is one of several seniors who are graduating.
`Those seniors that have only been with us for two years, they’ve got a lot to be proud of,` Dagostino said. `Hopefully next year, we’ll have some guards that will be coming up the line. We’ll be smaller, and hopefully that will make us better shooters.`
Shooting woes sink Scotia
Scotia-Glenville could sympathize with Mohonasen’s shooters. The Tartans only made 25 percent of their shots in a 57-48 quarterfinal loss to Ichabod Crane Sunday.
`That’s how we played today, and the way we shot really dictated everything else we did,` Scotia coach Jim Giammattei said.
The Tartans (16-5) stayed with Ichabod Crane through the first half and trailed by two points at halftime. But Scotia-Glenville went scoreless from late in the third quarter through the first 3:52 of the fourth quarter, which helped Ichabod Crane (18-2) build a 44-34 lead.
Patroon Conference all-star Dalton Austin-Michaud led Ichabod Crane with 17 points, eight rebounds and four assists. He also created several Scotia-Glenville turnovers, which sparked the Riders’ 27-15 run to end the game.
`He’s a great player, and we couldn’t control the way he scored ` meaning he scored in transition and off steals,` Giammattei said of Austin-Michaud. `He’s a very good player, and he makes a lot of plays.`
James Kehoe had 21 points, and Mike Stopera contributed 15 points for Scotia-Glenville.
Horses run past Sabres
In class B action Saturday, Schalmont saw a seven-point lead disappear in the fourth quarter as Schuylerville came back for a 58-54 victory.
The Sabres (11-11) took a 22-13 lead after the first quarter and hung on through the next two quarters to enter the final eight minutes with a 46-39 advantage. But the Black Horses outscored Schalmont 19-8 in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.
Rodney Humiston’s 14 points paced Schuylerville, while Jack Macejka led Schalmont with 16 points.“
