Once Upon a Time in Anatevka

$20“Once Upon a Time in Anatevka” is a tragicomedy adapted from Sholem Aleichem story familiar to “Fiddler on the Roof” fans. Set in Central Ukraine in 1905 it explores the hardships of those living in the Jewish pale of settlement a territory where the Jewish population of the Russian empire was restricted. It follows Tevye his wife Golda and their three daughters who are to marry. Tevye leans on his faith in God amidst his struggles and maintains his faith in others meeting adversity with dignity and a smile.
Sholem Aleichem was a prominent Yiddish writer. He is considered one of the greatest figures in Yiddish literature and is often referred to as the “Jewish Mark Twain.” Aleichem’s works captured the essence of Jewish life in Eastern Europe particularly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
“Once Upon a Time in Anatevka” is a poignant and thought-provoking and emotionally charged theatrical production that aims to raise awareness about the persistent issue of antisemitism. Through dramatic reenactments, monologues and visual elements the show explores the historical roots the devastating impact of antisemitism on Jewish communities. By shedding light on the dark history of antisemitism the show seeks to foster a more inclusive and accepting society encouraging audience members to actively engage in promoting tolerance and combating antisemitism in their communities.
