Java Jazz Cafe is likely to change ownership in the coming days.
Owner Cathy Callan will be handing over the reins after running the Delmar eatery for the past four years. She said an offer has been made on the restaurant and the closing is in progress.
The decision to sell came about largely for personal reasons, Callan said, especially considering the fact her daughter recently married and now lives in Berkeley, Calif.
I realized if she ever decides to be a mom, I would be traveling back and forth, she said. `Running a restaurant is not the easiest thing in the world. There’s a lot of details, so being focused here was important.`
Callan said she’s likely to remain in the area, however. Her husband teaches at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Java Jazz is located at Main Square on Delaware Avenue and is best known for its use of locally-produced ingredients in sandwiches, soups, pastries and breakfast items. The work of local artists also adorns the walls and there are often live music performances.
Making sure this local spirit is maintained has been a big part of the sale process, Callan said, and she feels the buyer is likely to keep this tradition going.
`It would be nice if whoever buys it were to keep it a community-focused place. That was always my primary intention, was to keep it very local,` she said.
