Savage to resign from County Legislature

Chairwoman accepts position in Cuomo Administration

Susan Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, announced today she will leave the legislature after accepting a position in the Cuomo Administration.

Savage has been selected to be the assistant deputy commissioner for the Office of Real Property Services, so rumors of her being tapped by Andrew Cuomo’s team are now confirmed. On Monday morning Judith Dagostino, vice chair of the County Legislature, will assume Savage’s role as chairwoman. The legislature will be appointing someone to fill her seat. The appointee would need to run in the upcoming election to retain their seat. Since 1998, Savage has been a county legislator and she served as chairwoman since 2004.

A main accomplishment Savage pointed to while on the legislature is establishing the county’s Office of Economic Development and Planning. Often during her tenure, along with her unsuccessful 2010 bid against Senator Hugh Farley, R-Niskayuna, she touted the economic development of the county and the revitalization of downtown Schenectady she helped facilitate.

I am truly grateful to the people of Niskayuna, Scotia and Glenville and Schenectady County for giving me the opportunity to serve my community for the past fourteen years. Like all of those in public service, my goal has always been to leave this community a better and stronger community than it was when I took office fourteen years ago, said Savage in a statement. `I’m proud to have led county government at a critical period and I thank my constituents and my colleagues on the County Legislature for the confidence they placed in me.`

Savage noted General Electric’s Alternative Energy Headquarters and new sodium battery plant as important projects for the county. Job creation has been a strong emphasis of her goals for the county.

`Job creation and rebuilding this community has always been my goal,` said Savage in a statement. `In the past seven years we’ve created 3,500 new jobs and attracted over $400 million in new investment throughout Schenectady County.`

Savage said she is excited to begin her new job.

`I look forward to working with our Governor, Andrew Cuomo, in my new role in state government,` said Savage.
