COLONIE — The town began a bench program for those who wish to memorialize a loved one or make a gift to the town.
It’s always been done, said Tom Breslin, the executive assistant to the supervisor, but the town is looking to streamline the process and make the benches look the same throughout the town’s parks.
“We had some people wondering if we had memorial benches we could place in parks to memorialize a loved one and we have always done it piecemeal,” he said. “One thing I wanted to do with this program is make sure all the benches are the same and everything looked consistent and professional.”
The benches can be in any of the town parks or along the bike path. A plaque with an inscription will be affixed to the benches. There is a cost associated with the program to cover the plaque, the poly resin benches and the labor to install them, but it is a break-even program and not meant to generate revenue, Breslin said.
The benches at the Crossings and the Town Park off Route 9 will cost $1,100, along the bike path will cost $950 and in any of the town’s smaller pocket parks it will cost $850.
The benches will either be affixed to a concrete pad or the legs will be encased by poured concrete footings. Town crews will install the benches.
