State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, near the Crossgates Mall entrance ramp. Police said Julie L. White, 41, of Albany, was traveling southbound on I-87 near the mall entrance ramp and apparently attempted to change lanes in traffic before striking a guide rail near the ramp. The vehicle reportedly became airborne and landed on the driver’s side and stopped in the center lane. Police said the vehicle caught on fire from a fuel leak, which local fire departments attempted to extinguish. White was the only person involved in the incident. All southbound lanes of I-87 were closed south of the I-87/I-90 exchange Wednesday evening for several hours following the incident. State Police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or events leading up to it, who has not been interviewed, is asked to call police at 783-3224.
