COLONIE — The Planning Board, by unanimous vote, approved the construction of a Safelite AutoGlass warehouse near the intersection of Old Niskayuna and Wade roads.
The one-story, 40,500-square-foot building will sit on 21.37 acres of land made up of four tax parcels. It will have 30 parking spots, a loading dock and storm water will be managed by porous pavement. One residential home will be demolished, according to Dan Hershberg who made the presentation on behalf of developer Peter Campito, while the three other structures, including Kaman Industrial Technologies and Kidz Corner, will remain.
The majority of discussion revolved around where to build about 1,000 lineal feet of sidewalk, along Old Niskayuna Road or Wade Road.
“There is an increased demand for pedestrian facilities in this area with the residential development, the occupation of the New York State Tax and Finance, projects like this and the Public Operations Center we are in,” said Joe Grasso, the town’s designated engineer from CHA.
It was determined the best course of action would be to use $48,000 already in an escrow from previous developments for pedestrian improvements in the area and install the walks along Wade Road from the intersection of Old Niskayuna Road to roughly Hastings Drive.
Board member Craig Shamilan asked what would happen to Old Niskayuna Road if all the sidewalk resources were used along Wade Road but Hershbert said that could be taken care of as other projects work their way through the planning process.
The project is within the Airport GEIS and as such Campito will be charged mitigation fees.
Safelite will employ about 40 people with a maximum of 26 on site at one time. There will be 14 mobile technicians equipped with business vehicles. The site is expected to generate 14 vehicle trips in the morning and 14 in the evening and that will have a negligible impact on surrounding roadways.
Safelite AutoGlass is a national auto glass repair and replacement company with outlets on Old Albany Shaker Road in Colonie and Western Avenue in Albany.
At the new site, pre-cut auto glass will be treated with weatherproofing and/or seals and then taken into the field to replace broken windshields or other auto glass.
