Approximately 100 reports of thefts from unlocked cars and opened garages have piled up at the Niskayuna Police Department since June.
Niskayuna police on Thursday, Aug. 9, announced it’s continuing to investigate a “large number” of reported thefts, particularly from summer months, where items inside unsecured vehicles and properties were allegedly stolen. All town neighborhoods have reported incidents, according to police, and the crimes are being committed in broad daylight and in the cover of the night.
Reports of stolen property continue to be filed, police said. Residents are being advised by police to secure their cars and property and remove valuables, or at least hid items out of sight. Also, police are encouraging residents to turn on an outside light.
The bulk of reported stolen items from vehicles include loose change, GPS units, credit cards and other valuables. Also, bicycles are commonly stolen from in and around garages, with even set of gold clubs allegedly stolen.
Police also stressed residents should report any suspicious activity.
“More than anything else, though, we are asking people to call 911 if they see something suspicious or out of place,” Det. Sgt. Daniel McManus said in a statement. “Too often people hesitate to call 911 because they feel it is not an emergency, only to find out later that a crime was being committed.”
If residents take the advised measures, police are hoping instances of these crimes will be reduced.
