Spring has finally sprung in the Capital District. As we breathe a communal sigh of relief to the end of cold, ice and snow, we turn our faces to the sun and make plans to enjoy the warmer weather and the promise of outdoor activities. While some may feel that fall and the back-to-school season or the holiday season are the busiest times of year, the start of the summer season can be just as hectic
With school out, most working families have the added pressure of ensuring that their children have some kind of structure to their day while mom and dad are at work. This may mean making trips back and forth to camps, athletic practices and competitions, academic enrichment programs or part-time jobs. Add to that our increased social engagements during this time of year — graduations, weddings, family reunions, and, if we are lucky, a little vacation escape — our calendars are full.
Experts tell us that having down-time is incredibly important for our children and ourselves. So as you plan the next few months, remember to build in some time to just be in the moment. We are so lucky to live in such an active a diverse area. Take advantage of what your community has to offer. Organizations publicize events in print, on their websites and on social media. If you are looking for programming for your children, you can find everything from drop-in programs to full-day care. Looking for a specific activity? You can find it. If you have decided that your family needs to engage in a healthier lifestyle, you can join a specialized class or visit your favorite nature spot and go on a hike.
If you need recommendations for childcare or health, wellness and recreation programming, we are here to help. The Colonie Youth Center offers eight weeks of full-day, structured and enriching childcare beginning June 25.
Limited spots remain, so call 518-438-9596 today for information. If you are looking for specialized sports camps, health and wellness programming, and family recreation, stop by the Rudy A. Ciccotti Family Recreation Center to see everything that they have to offer.
Finally, if you just need a night off from cooking (and who doesn’t?) join us for our Outback Steakhouse Drive-Thru BBQ Fundraiser to be held on June 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ciccotti Center, 30 Aviation Road, Colonie.
We will be offering adult dinners (steak or chicken) for $12 each and children’s meals (chicken tenders with mac and cheese) for $6 each. Visit colonieyouthcenter.org and pre-order your meals today. All proceeds will help fund the CYC Scholarship Assistance Program, providing our resources to area families in need.
When it comes right down to it, spending some unstructured time together is what is most important. So set aside some time to put the electronics away, set your phone on do not disturb, and forget about your e-mail for just a moment and enjoy this beautiful time of year.
