50th Anniversary Talk:  USS Scorpion

Ray Misiewicz is back with a program for the 50th Anniversary of the loss of the nuclear submarine USS Scorpion.

Ray – a former nuclear engineer at GE’s Knolls Atomic Nuclear laboratory – worked with the Navy for many years on nuclear submarines and has done a dozen different presentations here about our nuclear fleet over the years.

From Ray: “This story is about the USS Scorpion (SSN-589.) She was the second of two U.S. nuclear submarines lost at sea with all hands in the 1960s. Scorpion disappeared in May 1968 almost exactly five years after the loss of the USS Thresher (SSN-593) which was lost on April of 1963. The Scorpion’s loss remains shrouded in mystery even today. No one knows where, when, or why she was lost.”

Program starts at 6:30 p.m.

Get Started Researching Your Family Tree

Advertisements for family research sites often make genealogical research look easy – but if you’ve tried exploring your roots in the past, you know it can be a real challenge.

Good news: assistance is now available at the library, for beginners and experienced researchers alike. Make an appointment with Genealogist Alexis Graham for help with: Starting a family tree; building Ancestry.com research skills; developing research goals and strategies; accessing the hundreds of free online databases and archives; planning and beginning field research; and, writing biographical narratives.

Alexis has 30 years of research experience, including “old school” letter writing, field and archival research, and internet searches. She is a member and previous trustee of the Capital District Genealogy Society, and will be on site at the library every fourth Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. To sign up for a free half hour appointment, visit tiny.cc/clgeanealogy
