Spotlight Newsroom by Spotlight Newsroom
June 30, 2022
in Blogs, Community Blogs, Guilderland, Towns
Reading Time: 3 mins read

Summer reading is for all ages! Discover a full slate of summer fun as we dive into “Oceans of Possibilities!”

Find out how you can earn prizes by logging your reading in Beanstack at: https://guilderlandlibrary.org/adultsrp for adults, and https://guilderlandlibrary.org/srp for kids and teens. Keep an eye on our Events calendar online, as registration opens two weeks prior to the program.

For kids, Tuesdays are take-home kit days; Wednesdays are in-person activity days; and Thursdays are Storytime days in our lovely Literary Garden out back (weather-permitting). Register for all programs on the Events tab of guilderlandlibrary.org.

The week of July 5-9 is “Explore the Seven Seas” week, featuring:

Tuesday Activity Kits: register for an ocean kit for pre-K-grade 1, or a seaglass art kit for grades 6-12, then pick up starting Tuesday, July 5

Wednesday Program: Cold Water Quest with the Georgia Aquarium for grades K-3, Wednesday, July 6, at 2 p.m. Meet us at the library for a virtual field trip to learn about Arctic and Antarctic Ocean ecosystems, followed by activities about cold water animals we’ll complete together

Thursday storytime: Thursday, July 7, at 10:30 a.m. for infants through age 5 and their caregivers. Gather ‘round for a rollicking good time, all about ocean animals!

We’ll read books, sing songs, and enjoy a fun time together.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Various teen volunteer options are available at GPL this summer! Gain valuable experience working with our collection, serving as a hands-on craft and program volunteer, or assisting at the Teen Tech Helpdesk. Teens can also create videos, playlists, craft projects and more.

See https://guilderlandlibrary.org/teenvolunteers/ or contact us at: [email protected] to learn more.

Summer Schedule

The Guilderland Farmer’s Market will be held in our upper parking lot Sundays 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., July 3 – Oct. 2, featuring 30 vendors. In accordance with our summer schedule, GPL is closed on Sundays during July and Aug. GPL will be closed on Monday. July 4 in observance of Independence Day.

Night Owls
Book Club

We’re keeping with the “Oceans of Possibilities” summer reading program theme, reading “The Island of the Sea Women” by Lisa See. This intriguing historical novel is about female friendship and devastating family secrets on a small Korean island. Interested? Pick up a copy of the book at the library’s Information desk, then register on the Events tab of our website to join the virtual discussion on Monday, July 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Claude Monet: Obsessed with the Natural World

Indisputably, Claude Monet is one of the most recognized and celebrated figures in art history. Everyone loves his beautiful landscapes, colorful and dynamic depictions of modern life, and monumental garden scenes. In this virtual program on Wednesday, July 13, at 6 p.m., you’ll learn about how this revered figure went from rejected outsider to groundbreaking icon of Modernism. Please register on the Events tab of our website.

Genealogy Help

Would you like expert assistance exploring your family tree? Professional Genealogist Lisa Dougherty offers 1:1 family history consultations at the library. Please contact Lisa directly at: [email protected] to schedule your appointment on Wednesday, July 15 between 6 to 8 p.m.

Her website is: http://www.upstatenygenealogy.com.

Memoirs in the Morning

For July, we’re reading “The Salt Path” by Raynor Winn – the true story of a couple who lost everything and embarked on a transformative journey walking the South West Coast Path in England. Please obtain a copy, then register on the Events tab of our website for the online meetup Wed. July 20 at 10:30 a.m. Can’t make it to our Zoom meeting? Look for the “Memoirs in the Morning” group on goodreads.com.

The Guilderland Library Foundation is hosting their annual golf tournament on Mon. Aug. 22 at Pinehaven Country Club. Registration begins at 8:15 a.m. with a 9:00 start. The $165 cost covers 18 holes, golf cart, lunch at the turn, and 19th hole celebration. Non-golfers can join the 19th hole celebration BBQ dinner for $50. Sponsorship opportunities are due by Fri.
