Guilderland Public Library news: Local history resources

Spotlight Newsroom by Spotlight Newsroom
June 2, 2022
in Blogs, Community Blogs, Guilderland, Towns
Reading Time: 3 mins read

GPL’s revamped Local History Room contains a wealth of materials related to the history of Guilderland, as well as other communities throughout the region. We also have resources to assist with genealogical research which do not circulate, but can be searched through the Library’s online catalog.

In addition, we’re also seeking Guilderland High School Tawasenthan yearbooks from the following years: 1942, 1951, 1952, 1955, 2004, and 2014. Thank you for considering donating a yearbook to help us complete our collection for everyone to access. Current Local History Room hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, 1 to 5 p.m.; and by appointment. Inquiries may be directed to: [email protected]

Wildflower Seed Giveaway

We’re giving away 500 packets of native wildflower seeds (Northeast blend) in advance of National Pollinator Week (June 20-26)! The resulting flowers will provide both habitat and food supply for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. Stop by the Adult Information Desk June 1-15; limit of 2 packets per person, on a first-come, first-served basis.

This initiative is made possible thanks to the #PlantWildflowers Campaign, a joint venture of PBS, Nature, and Tangled Bank Studios, producer of the documentary entitled “My Garden of a Thousand Bees.” We’re screening this film on Wednesday, June 22, at 6 p.m. in the Library’s Westbrook Room. Space is limited; please register on the Events calendar at guilderlandlibrary.org.

GPL Library
closed June 2

GPL is closed Thursday, June 2 for our annual Staff Development Day. Our online resources, including eBooks, eMagazines, audiobooks, learning tools and much more, are always available, as well as our car charging stations, Little Free Library, book donation bins, and parking lot Wi-Fi.

Computer Coach

Would you like assistance with your Apple device, or with using Learning Express on our website to craft a winning résumé? Sign up on our online Events calendar for an in-person one-hour session at the Library with Computer Coach Robin on Friday, June 3 or 17, at 10 or 11 a.m.

Green Reads:
The Bear

Our Green Reads Book Discussion Group convenes online Thursday, June 9, at 6 p.m. to talk about “The Bear,” Andrew Krivak’s cautionary tale about the reverence due to nature’s dominion, and the devastating consequences of wanton disregard. Please register on the Events tab of guilderlandlibrary.org; space is limited.

Night Owls: Four Hundred Souls

Contributions from 90 Black writers spanning African-American history from 1619-2019 were compiled by Ibram X. Kendi and Keisha N. Blain to comprise “Four Hundred Souls,” the subject of our next Night Owls book discussion on Monday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. To participate virtually, please sign up on the Events tab of our website.

We Who Believe in Freedom

On Monday, June 20, at 7 p.m., join us for an important online conversation with Dr. Alice Green, founder and executive director of the Center for Law and Justice, about her book We Who Believe in Freedom: Activism and the Struggle for Social Justice. In discussion with Paul Grondahl, award-winning journalist, author and director of the New York State Writers Institute, Green will convey her experience as a lifelong advocate for social justice; discuss historic and continuing challenges; and outline current initiatives and how others can get involved. Please register on the Events tab of our website to receive the link.

General Info

Overdue fines have been eliminated at GPL; patrons will be billed for the replacement cost of lost items. Curbside pick up is available with 24-hour notice. Please wear a mask – if you need one, just ask. Contact us at 518-456-2400 or [email protected]
