Colonie town officials:
How sad when most of America is worrying about how to keep our economy afloat, how our poor and suddenly unemployed will keep body and soul together, the Town of Colonie takes aim at the most helpless among us.
The proposed panhandling bill, cobbled together from other poorly crafted nastiness, will cost the town thousands to defend. Since it is clearly unconstitutional, the ACLU has successfully challenged similar acts again and again. And that’s not all. It is cruel and totally unnecessary.
We know your history of road blocking low and moderate income housing. We would hope that in these difficult times you would be proposing programs to help the poor, provide needed services to the helpless, instead of attempting to roust them yet again, as you did from the Single Room Occupancies on Central Avenue.
Your heartless policy begs the question: what can Colonie do to help those less fortunate, in this time of crisis? This is the question you should all address, tonight.
