COLONIE – An on-duty police officer was injured when the patrol car he was driving hit another car and ended up crashing into a telephone pole on Troy Schenectady Road near First Avenue at around 5:38 p.m. on Thursday, July 19.
According to Sgt. John O’Donnell, the officer was responding to a reported “violent domestic disturbance” with lights and siren activated. He was traveling eastbound on Troy Schenectady Road and collided with a Honda Pilot, also traveling eastbound.
The force of the collision drove the police officer off the road and into the telephone pole.
The driver of the Honda, a 16-year-old male from Clifton Park, was not injured. The officer was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.
The perpetrator of the call the officer was responding to was arrested shortly thereafter and faces felony arson charges as well as criminal mischief.
The crash remains under investigation by members of the Colonie Police Department Traffic Safety Unit.
There are no charges pending related to the crash, according to O’Donnell.
