COEYMANS — A bear was killed when it was struck by a motorist on Route 9W earlier today, Saturday, June 23.
The bear was struck along the 1700 block of Route 9W in Coeymans. Coeymans police received a phone call shortly before noon.
The bear appeared to be five feet in length and weigh 200 pounds. According to the New York state Department of Environmental Conservation, adult bears can weigh between 150 and 300 pounds.
The accident was in an area where residents had previously reported bear activity. In May, Bethlehem police had received multiple calls of toppled bird feeders and trash cans. The extent of the damage was consistent with bears.
