DELMAR – Kids across the county were ushered back to class last week for the first time since school let out for the summer in June. They enter the academic year with the state Education Department continuing to look at redefining what it will require of them to graduate from high school. End-of-year exams may soon by something of the past. The Education Department presented such a plan to the Board of Regents in June, at least eliminating the requirement for high school students to take the presently mandated five Regents Examinations. Known as the “NYS Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures,” the movement started nearly five years ago to reassess graduation requirements. That discussion is expected to continue in the coming weeks.
