ALBANY Disney on Ice returns to the Times Union Center with a global view on the holidays.
“Let’s Celebrate!” presented by YoKids, is all about experiencing the holidays through the eyes of the Disney characters,” stated director Patty Vincent. “With Mickey’s Digital Global Destinator, we are able to travel to far-off places like China for the Chinese New Year and to Brazil for Carnival.”
The Feld Entertainment production is in the midst of a 35-city tour, and stops at Albany from Thursday, Dec. 17 to Sunday, Dec. 20, at the Times Union Center.
Audiences will experience celebrations of different cultures as they join Mickey Mouse and friends on a tour around the world. The production’s creative team created a show with an abundance of colors, warmth and spirit to evoke the pleasant memories of the holidays.
“The show takes on a contemporary perspective with new music, choreography, costumes and video technology that pumps incredible energy into every moment of the show,” stated writer Jerry Bilik. “Mickey even causes a few mix-ups with his Digital Global Destinator, but in the end everything wraps up in one of the happiest celebrations ever.”
One of the 40 performers on the ice will have a different sort of celebration, personally.
Johan Lundqvist, who turns 29 on the 19th, has performed with Feld Entertainment for 10 years, skating exclusively for Disney on Ice.
“It’s funny. The last time I was in Albany, it was for Disney on Ice, and I celebrated my 19th birthday,”he said.
Upon starting his career with Disney on Ice, Lundqvist had to transition from a competitive figure skater, a career that took him to the Swedish junior national championships.
“When you compete and go through the national championships, you’re so focused on your skating technique. Whereas, what I do now, when I am in character, it’s a performance to act.”
This year’s production promises visits from more than 50 classic and contemporary Disney characters in a compilation of favorite holidays and celebrations from different cultures.
Sets include a variety of different scenes, from fire-twirling Hawaiian luau dancers to zombie-like movements of the ghoulish groupies in Halloween. Audiences will also visit more domestic locations like New Orleans to meet Tiana in a Mardi Gras performance. Tiana is one of the seven Disney Princesses cast for a production that also includes a Valentine’s Day Royal Ball with Princess Tiana; a Very Merry UnBirthday Party with Alice and the Mad Hatter; Jack Skellington’s frightfully festive Halloween party with the
