COLONIE — Shaker High School Theatre is performing Disney’s Newsies, a musical based on the New York City Newsboys strike of 1899.
Jack Kelley, played by Scout Santoro, becomes the leader, rallying together “newsies” and child workers across the city. The group stands up and challenges rich and powerful newsmen Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst.
During the Shaker production, Emma Commisso plays Katherine Plumber, Will Jelstrom plays Crutchie and Sam Dvorak plays Davie. Cameron Richardson plays Joseph Pulitzer while Emory Garber plays Medda Larkin.
The production is produced by Soo Yeon Justesen and directed by Amy Kimbler. Peter Suzuki is technical director and Sheryl Farrell did the costumes. The music director/pit conductor is Sam Baldwin and the choreographers are Aidan Fecko and Anna Dominguez.
The performances are Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 31 at 2 p.m. Tickets are between $10 and $12.
