ALBANY — Generation Axe came to The Palace Theatre bringing a show full of amazing guitar solo’s by some of the world’s best guitarists on Thursday, Nov. 29.
If you don’t know what Generation Axe is, let me fill you in.
Generation Axe is a super group featuring Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi.
Each guitarist comes from their own unique background adding flare to the show.
Vai, the three-time Grammy Award-winning artist, earned his chops while playing guitar with Frank Zappa as a teenager. He moved on to wow hard rock fans with David Lee Roth, when he and his talking guitar joined the former Van Halen frontman on “Yankee Rose.”
Known best as the founding member of Black Label Society, Wylde is also associated with the Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osborne. On stage, he’s known to play a Bibson Les Paul. Online, he’s one of the most eccentric and fun personalities to follow on Twitter.
Malmsteen has released 20 studio albums, and earned a name for himself in the 1980s with his neoclassical heavy metal style of play. He’s considered among the top guitarists of all time, and if you’ve played Guitar Hero, seeing his name cross the screen means you’re doing extraordinary.
Throughout the night guitarists came on for their own separate pieces and other times, all musicians would be on the stage together playing synchronized or soloing.
For one song, Wylde made his way in to the crowd while playing and got all the way up to the balcony.
Wylde is a guitarist known for his wild on stage interactions and blistering solos.
The show ended with all guitarists on stage together playing Queen’s beloved “Bohemian Rhapsody” which had the crowd singing along to the tune.
