2018 Alive at Five lineup announced

Albany – Albany’s free Alive at Five concert series returns for its 29th season on June 7, presented by KeyBank.  Concerts will take place at the Jennings Landing location along the riverfront.

Five-dollar flat fee parking will be available at the Riverfront Parking Garage, located at 677 Broadway in Albany. For additional parking options, visit www.parkalbany.com.

Alive at Five’s rain location at the Corning Preserve Boat Launch will continue to serve as an alternate site in case of inclement weather.

Albany’s signature free concert series premiered in the summer of 1990 with a performance by legendary folk artist Richie Havens and has since grown into a staple of summer in the Capital District. This year’s season runs through August 2 (with no show on July 5), showcasing a diverse lineup of big names, up-and-coming acts and the region’s most talented original local artists. The concerts take place from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

JUNE 7

GREAT WHITE

Best known for its Grammy-nominated Best Hard Rock Performance hit, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” Great White has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, has six Top 100 Billboard hits, nine Top 200 Billboard albums, two platinum albums and clocked the top of MTV video four times.

JOE MANSMAN AND THE MIDNIGHT REVIVAL BAND

Joe Mansman and The Midnight Revival Band are a five-piece from northern New York, heavily impelled by outlaw rock ‘n’ roll, blues, roots and punk. The band’s only aim is to have a notoriously good time and take the whole place down with it.


JUNE 14

ALBERT HAMMOND JR.

Strokes’ rhythm and lead guitarist, Albert Hammond Jr.’s solo career took his music in more eclectic, and more personal, directions. His fourth solo album, Francis Trouble, was created as an homage to the stillborn death of his twin brother.

DARK HONEY

Dark Honey is comprised of three brothers and a childhood friend who have been making music together since they were kids. After spending several years in the south, the group moved back to its roots in the northeast and began to fine-tune its unique sound. Embracing a truly DIY spirit, the band records and releases all its music from its indie studio in Upstate.

 

JUNE 21

MATISYAHU

Singer-songwriter Matisyahu has been on a journey inward for more than a decade. The journey has been private and public. The journey has at times been explicitly external, even while being driven by internal change.

Mirk

MIRK is a six-piece musical powerhouse, delivering new music that is both fresh and familiar.  Based in Upstate, MIRK has been making the people dance for eight years.  It has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the likes of the Wu-Tang Clan, J. Cole, Third Eye Blind, The Neighborhood, The Heavy and Mr. Cheeks.

 

JUNE 28

B.B. KING BLUES BAND featuring TITO JACKSON

For over half a century, B.B. King and B.B. King’s Blues Band defined the blues to the world, averaging over 250 sold out concerts per year. Now, superstar Tito Jackson has teamed up with B.B. King’s Blues Band to tour, keeping the musical legacy of B.B. King, The Jackson 5 and The Jacksons alive.

THE AGE

The Age, a soul artist, has traveled throughout the country endowing those he encounters with his smooth tones and inventive lyrics. Originally from Upstate, Age’s music brings together both influences from the laid back west coast and New York’s underground late night jazz scene. Together with some of the Capital District’s most talented musicians, The Age delivers an unforgettable performance. A musician since his adolescent years, Age finally discovered his true sound after moving to southern California. He has since returned to the East Coast to share his melodies and continue his musical journey.

 

JULY 12

BIG DADDY KANE

Big Daddy Kane is a Brooklyn M.C. who undisputedly defined the term “lyricist” in the world of hip-hop. Kane has endured a substantive music career. He has several gold albums, endless music accolades including a Grammy award. He also received a VH1 Hip Hop Honor in 2005.

DJ TRUMASTR

DJ Trumastr is being held hostage by two turntables and a mic….DJ Trumastr is an international-touring DJ based out of Albany. Infused with a rich knowledge of music, this creative innovator spins infectious blends that transcend both cultural and generational boundaries.

UND3RSTANDING

Und3rstanding is a three-man hip-hop group from Upstate featuring Sev Statik, SES Vth and Knowle’ge. Individually, these artists stand as giants in the realm of underground hip-hop. Collectively, they form a powerful group whose mission is to entertain, enlighten and embody what it means to be an emcee. The name Und3rstanding alludes to supreme mathematics and the principles of knowledge, wisdom and understanding.

DJ SUPREME

DJ Supreme, a.k.a Rodney B. More, is a native of Baltimore, Md. An accomplished turntablist, DJ Supreme has been behind the 1200’s for several years. From anywhere in the world you can hear DJ Supreme, with ”The Supreme Experience” Hot 991 show.

 

JULY 19

THIRD WORLD

Celebrating 45 years, Third World is one of the longest-lived reggae bands of all time and one of Jamaica’s most consistently popular crossover acts among international audiences. Mixing in elements of R&B, funk, pop, and rock and, later on, dancehall and rap.

MIXED ROOTS

Under the leadership of drummer George, Mixed Roots is a rare breed of bands. All are from different areas, and now call Albany home. This band plays with energy emerging from its mixed roots. It is prepared and excited to share its styles with you!

 

JULY 26

YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND

For nearly 19 years, Yonder Mountain String Band has redefined bluegrass music, expanding the traditional acoustic genre beyond its previously established boundaries by steadily pushing the envelope into the realms of rock ‘n’ roll and improvisation.

BLIND CROW BAND

A progressive string quartet from Albany, Blind Crow Band blends technical proficiency, infectious rhythms and insane amounts of energy to create an inspiring musical experience. The band’s repertoire reflects the unique musical perspective that the four members bring.

 

AUGUST 2

SIR SLY

Since forming in 2012, Sir Sly have forged its singular sound by drawing upon each member’s long-honed musical talents: Jacobs’s introspective yet infinitely searching lyricism, Suwito’s in-studio ingenuity, and Coplen’s sophisticated musicianship and sense of songcraft.

THE LATESHIFT

Rooted in rock, blooming in melodious consonance, The LateShift can be described as a blend of soulful melodies moved by riff-driven rock. By combining elements of old-school rock & roll and modern pop, the group has a distinct sound that is not to be missed.
