SARATOGA SPRINGS — Opera Saratoga has announced that internationally-renowned singing group The GrooveBarbers will return to Saratoga Springs for a concert titled “Audacious A Cappella” in the Vapor nightclub at Saratoga Casino Hotel on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 4 p.m. Two of Skidmore College’s a cappella groups, The Barnsnatchers and The Dynamics, will open for The GrooveBarbers. Proceeds from the concert will provide financial assistance for Opera Saratoga’s community programs during the 2016-17 season.
The Village Voice calls The GrooveBarbers, “a cappella rock and soul royalty.” Each member of this all-vocal powerhouse quartet is a bona fide star in his own right: Sean Altman, Charlie Evett and Steve Keyes are former members of the pioneering modern a cappella group Rockapella, while. Kevin Weist is a renowned bald vocal guru. The GrooveBarbers have established themselves as the go-to vocal group for rock, doo-wop, jazz and barbershop. The performance will also feature guest soprano Inna Dukach, a former Opera Saratoga young artist who has gone on to grace the stages of the world including The Royal Opera House Covent Garden.
In addition to beloved a cappella favorites and whimsical new arrangements, together they will also perform their signature specialty: “doowopera!”
“We are very excited to welcome back The GrooveBarbers, after their first appearance in Saratoga Springs in 2014,” said Lawrence Edelson, artistic and general director of Opera Saratoga. “Great singing comes in many forms, and The GrooveBarbers bring great singing to a completely new level – not only with their incredible arrangements of popular songs past and present, but also with their hilarious “doowopera” renditions of beloved arias. Programs that will be supported by this concert include our Saratoga Sings! events starting at the end of October and running through April; and Opera-to-Go, which brings live opera to over 20,000 young students every year.”
General admission tickets are $50, while student/youth (under 21) cost $25. VIP reserved seating tickets, which include a personally signed GrooveBarbers CD, cost $100. Tickets will be $60 at the door, subject to availability.
