RENSSELAER – With a 17-16 lead after a kill by Jonah Negris the Bethlehem Boys Volleyball team was one point away from winning the fifth game and the Section II Division 1 championship on Friday, Nov. 4, but Shenendehowa ripped off three straight points and ended the run for the Eagles.
Number one seeded Shen (24-0) couldn’t put the second seeded Eagles (23-2) away at any time during the match. A loud crowd was a factor in the packed Rensselaer High School gym as both teams had to handle the pressure from the sidelines.
Shen jumped out to a 1-0 lead winning 25-20, but Bethlehem came roaring back winning the second 25-30 on some great plays by Senior Jackson Gray and setters Joe Monserrat and Ben Sorrentino.
The Plainsman surged ahead again and took the third game 25-16, but that set off the Bethlehem fans and got the team fired up to where the Eagles came roaring back. Hitters Cade Allen and Luke Saubler were active at the net, while Adrian Lopez and Dan Battista showed grit on the defensive side. Bethlehem was all even after winning the game 25-19.
The fifth and deciding game ended 19-17 in favor of the Plainsmen.
