Girls basketball: Catherine Cairns lifts Saratoga past Bethlehem

ALBANY COUNTY Saratoga Springs sprung a surprise on Bethlehem by beating the Lady Eagles 66-57 in a Suburban Council girls basketball game Friday, Jan. 15, in Delmar.

The Blue Streaks (6-6) built an early eight-point lead behind a pair of three-pointers from Kerry Flaherty and eight points from Catherine Cairns. Bethlehem rallied to tie the score at 17-17 at the end of the first quarter and took a couple of small leads in the second quarter, only to see Saratoga pull away.

Cairns was a big part of Saratoga’s success. She drained three three-pointers and went 10-for-11 from the free throw line to finish with 25 points. Flaherty contributed 13 points.

Jenna Giacone poured in 25 points, and Emily Wander added 11 points for Bethlehem.

In other Suburban Council action, CeCe Mayo scorched Colonie for 35 points to lead Shaker past the Lady Raiders 67-63.

Mayo dominated in the paint, making 10 shots from the field, and she drained 15 of her 22 foul shots for Shaker (12-2). Audrey Martino andn Shyla Sanford each chipped in with 10 points.

Erin Fouracre scored 18 points, Alivia Paeglow contributed 17 points and Aliyah Wright netted 16 points for Colonie (7-5).

Guilderland downed Niskayuna 48-23 in Guilderland. Megan Dunn was the high scorer with nine points for the Lady Dutch, while Olivia Bauman, Skye Lindsay and Rachel Mastrianni all chipped in with eight points.

Voorheesville (9-4) won a defensive battle against Holy Names by pulling out a 35-31 Colonial Council victory. Rebecca Clair paced the Blackbirds with 15 points, while Mackenzie Ward led Holy Names (13-2) with 10 points.

Cohoes (6-9) edged Watervliet 53-51 behind Merea Brajac’s 24-point night. Ali Changa led Watervliet (6-8) with 23 points.

New Lebanon defeated Loudonville Christian School 42-36 in a Central Hudson Valley League game Thursday, Jan. 14. Cailey Tynan netted 21 points for New Lebanon (5-8), while Mikayla Burnett had 13 points for Loudonville Christian (5-6).
