Shaker’s William Matz was the lone Section 2 swimmer to reach the finals of a race at this year’s New York State Boys Swimming and Diving Championships at Ithaca College.
Matz competed in the 200-yard individual medley finals Saturday, Feb. 28, and placed seventh with a time of 1:56.08. Alex Park of Half Hollow Hills (Section 11) won the race with a time of 1:51.60.
Matz made the B finals in the 100-yard butterfly and finished 11th overall with a time of 52.16 seconds. Brighton’s Noah Stevens claimed the state title with a time of 48.98 seconds.
Matz also helped Shaker’s 200-yard medley and freestyle relay teams finish in the top 15. The 200-yard medley relay team of Matz, Nicholas Buff, Zeeshan Irani and Mark Enright placed 11th with a time of 1:38.42, and the 200 freestyle relay team of Matz, Irani, Enright and Andrew Semmes took 12th place with a time of 1:28.14.
Pittsford (Section 5) won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:36.25, and Brockport (Section 5) finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.21.
Shaker finished 18th out of 66 teams with 40 points. Fordham Prep won the Federation title with 245 points, and Garden City (Section 8) was the public school team champion with 121 points.
