The Voorheesville boys basketball team pushed Schalmont into overtime before falling to the Colonial Council Liberty Division-leading Sabres 59-53 Friday, Jan. 9, in Rotterdam.
The Blackbirds (4-2 league, 6-4 overall) overcame a 12-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Sabres (4-0, 8-1) 31-19 in the second half. Twice, Voorheesville tied the score in the fourth quarter, but it couldn’t push ahead of Schalmont, which then outscored the Blackbirds 8-2 in the four-minute overtime period.
Nick Bird poured in 23 points, and Zac O’Dell added 12 points for Schalmont, which leads Voorheesville in the Liberty Division by two games in the loss column. Three Blackbirds reached double digits in scoring, led by Isaiah Meaux’s 14-point performance.
Voorheesville hosted Fonda-Fultonville Tuesday, Jan. 13.
Girls basketball
The Voorheesville girls basketball team held on for a 46-43 Colonial Council home victory over Schalmont Friday, Jan. 9.
The Blackbirds (3-4, 4-6) raced out to a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and fended off the Sabres (2-4, 5-5) the rest of the night.
Voorheesville’s Jordan Pettograsso netted 22 points to lead all scorers. Hailee and Sydnee Metzold combined to score 32 of Schalmont’s 43 points.
The Blackbirds began a three-game road trip Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Fonda-Fultonville. They visit Academy of the Holy Names Friday, Jan. 16, and Cobleskill Tuesday, Jan. 20.
