When Siena defeated Fresno State 81-68 Saturday, April 5, at the Alumni Recreation Center to claim the College Basketball Invitational title, it marked the first national postseason championship for the Loudonville-based school since it moved to the NCAA Division I level for basketball.
What we want to know is where does that CBI title rank in the program’s storied history. Remember, Siena has been to the NCAA tournament five times since 1989 and had three memorable first-round victories — Stanford in ’89 and the `onions, double order` game against Ohio State five years ago. However, the Saints have never gotten beyond the Round of 32 in the NCAAs. They have reached the NIT semifinals once, and now they have the CBI title.
