Quarterback Kevin Carr was a one-man wrecking crew for the Monroe-Woodbury football team.
Carr rushed for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead the Section IX champions past Christian Brothers Academy 38-25 in Saturday’s Class AA football regional game at Kingston’s Dietz Stadium.
The Brothers (9-2) took a 13-7 lead early in the second quarter on Elliot Croskey’s 44-yard touchdown run, but Monroe-Woodbury (11-0) scored the last 10 points of the period to build a 17-13 halftime lead. Matt Paul booted a 32-yard field goal, and Cole Gennett added a 2-yard touchdown run for the Crusaders.
Carr increased Monroe-Woodbury’s lead in the third quarter when he tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Jesse Kaltenberger. Croskey responded with a 78-yard scoring scamper to pull CBA within five points, but Carr capped a Monroe-Woodbury series with a 5-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to make it a 31-19 lead.
The Brothers got back within striking distance of the Crusaders when quarterback Joe Kolbe threw a 56-yard scoring strike to Austin Ellis. However, Carr made a couple of key plays down the stretch, including a 3-yard touchdown run with 2:09 left in the fourth quarter that created the final score.
Carr rushed for a team-high 129 yards and threw for another 180 yards to pace Monroe-Woodbury, which meets Section I champion White Plains in next weekend’s state semifinal in Kingston.
Croskey capped a strong season for CBA with 162 rushing yards on nine carries, and Kolbe completed seven of his 11 passes for 112 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
