There are two undefeated boys lacrosse teams left in the Suburban Council.
Come Tuesday, there will be only one.
Shaker (6-0 league, 9-0 overall) maintained its perfect record by beating Bethlehem 9-2 Friday to set up Tuesday’s showdown against the other undefeated team, Niskayuna (7-0, 9-0).
`This is a special group of kids,` said Shaker coach Shawn Hennessey. `We’re allowing them to play lacrosse, and they’re doing a very good job of making their reads and working together.`
Shaker’s offense had been on fire entering Friday’s South Division game against Bethlehem (1-7, 3-7). The Blue Bison averaged more than 14 goals per game over their last five contests, including a 23-goal outburst in a victory over Columbia Wednesday.
Bethlehem goaltender Dan Comber did his best to cool off Shaker’s attack. Comber made 21 saves as he extended his streak of holding opponents to less than 50 percent shooting percentage to four games.
`Their goalie gave us problems all game,` said Hennessey.
Bethlehem’s problem was getting quality shots on goal. Shaker limited the Eagles to nine total shots, seven of which were stopped by goaltenders Aidan Snyder (five saves) and Andrew Leahey (two saves).
`We’ve been playing good defense all year,` said Bethlehem coach Dave Rounds. `We’re just struggling to put the ball in the net.`
Tim Leahey, Nick Dodd and Liam King each scored two goals to lead Shaker’s offense. Dodd’s pair of goals lifted his season total to a team-high 23 markers. Stephen Rehfuss is second on the team with 20 goals and tied with Dodd for the team lead in assists with 12.
Joe Verstandig tallied both of Bethlehem’s goals in the third quarter.
