A tipped puck tipped the scales in Saturday’s Capital District High School Hockey League game between Christian Brothers Academy and LaSalle.
Zach Swanteck tipped Grant Stockman’s shot past LaSalle goaltender Zac Rentz with 3:10 left in the third period to give the Brothers a 1-0 victory at the Albany County Hockey Facility.
“We had to score first,” said CBA coach Blaine Drescher. “In a low-scoring game, getting the first goal is vital.”
Rentz kept the Cadets in the game by making 26 saves, but he couldn’t see Swanteck’s deflection in time.
CBA goaltender Kyle Stockman stopped 12 shots to pick up the victory.
“Kyle did a great job (in Friday’s 3-3 tie against Shenendehowa) and a phenomenal job tonight,” said Drescher. “But as we said in the locker room, we needed a big goal.”
Earlier in the evening, Shaker/Colonie forged a 3-3 tie against Queensbury at the ACHF.
Brendon Closs scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 left in the third period to help the Jets (6-0-1, 7-1-2) pull out the tie.
Joey Moore gave Queensbury (3-2-1, 7-5-2) a 1-0 lead when he scored with 32 seconds left in the first period, but Mike Mineau tallied with three seconds left in the stanza to tie the score at 1-1. A similar pattern appeared in the second period as Michael Shultes gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead on his goal, and Jeff Bink evened the score a short time later with a Jets goal.
Michael Pagels tallied with 8:34 left in the third period to put Queensbury ahead 3-2 before Closs’ goal sent the game into overtime.
Shaker/Colonie goaltender Zach Dignum and Queensbury netminder Teddy Nolan each made 23 saves.
