Winter
• The Scotia-Glenville boys basketball team returned to the top of the Section II heap by beating Bishop Gibbons 59-43 in the Class A finals. Joe Cremo scored 24 points, and tournament most valuable player Chris Zanta contributed 15 points for the Tartans, who won their second Sectional title in three years.
To get to the finals, Scotia-Glenville needed a last-second overtime basket by Matt Renko to edge defending Class A champion Mohonasen 62-61 in the semifinals. The Mighty Warriors led by as many as 11 points in the second half before the Tartans rallied to tie the score at 57.
• Mekeel Christian Academy entered the Class B playoffs as the No. 2 seed, but the Lions were upended by No. 6 Cohoes 71-57 in the semifinals. The loss ended a stellar career for Collin Stewart, who set a school record for total points (1,482) and points in a single game (47).
• The Scotia-Glenville girls basketball team reached the Class A Sectional finals, but defending champion Averill Park forced the Lady Tartans into 24 turnovers on its way to a 41-33 victory. Cassie Broadhead led Scotia-Glenville with 15 points.
Averill Park defeated Mohonasen 48-41 in the Sectional semifinals to advance into the Class A finals. It was the final game for Mohonasen coach Paul Brosious, who stepped down after guiding the Mighty Warriors to back-to-back Sectional final four appearances, including the 2011 Class A finals.
• Schalmont’s Nick Gallo qualified for the state wrestling tournament for the second year in a row. Gallo won his first-round bout before dropping into the consolation bracket with a quarterfinal loss to Medina’s Tristan Hamner. The freshman finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.
• The Niskayuna boys swim team placed second to Shenendehowa at the Section II Division I championships. Emerson Wells led the Silver Warriors with a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, while Josh Dodway placed second in the Division I diving competition to qualify for the state meet. Evan Melby qualified for states in the 100-yard breaststroke, and the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Melby, Wells, Dylan Karlok and Ryan Burke won the Division I title.
• Schalmont’s Devon Willis proved he could do more than run with a football really fast. Willis won the Section II boys triple jump title and placed second in the 55-meter hurdles in indoor track. Willis then placed fourth in the triple jump at the state meet.
• Niskayuna’s Kaleigh Higgins was part of the Section II sprint medley relay team that won the state title with a time of 10:16.68. Higgins made the Section II relay team after placing third in the girls 600-meter race at the state qualifier.
Spring
• The Niskayuna boys lacrosse team used a high-powered offense to win the Section II Class A title with a 17-11 victory over defending champion Shenendehowa in the finals. North Carolina-bound junior Luke Goldstock led the Silver Warriors with four goals and five assists, while Lucas Maloney contributed four goals and two assists. Niskayuna got as far as the state semifinals before losing to Long Island power West Islip.
• Scotia-Glenville had a shot at winning the Class C boys lacrosse title, but Glens Falls goaltender Matt Mender stood in the Tartans’ way. Mender made 15 saves to lead the Indians past the Tartans 8-5 for the Sectional title.
• Niskayuna’s five-year run of Sectional girls lacrosse titles came to an end when the Silver Warriors lost to eventual champion Shaker 10-7 in the Class A semifinals. The loss ended Kayla Treanor’s high school career, but not before she piled up 57 goals and 38 assists in her senior season. The Syracuse University-bound Treanor finished her career with 213 goals and 110 assists.
• The Scotia-Glenville baseball team upended No. 2 seed Lansingburgh in the Section II Class A quarterfinals before losing to Foothills Council rival Queensbury 8-6 in the semifinals. The Tartans entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed after posting a 10-8 regular season record.
• Mekeel Christian Academy made a bid for the Class D Sectional baseball title, but the Lions lost to eventual champion Fort Ann 22-1 in the semifinals. MCA edged Germantown 10-9 in the quarterfinals.
• Schalmont won the Colonial Council Patriot Division title in baseball and earned the No. 2 seed for the Class B Sectional playoffs, but the Sabres fell to Fonda-Fultonville in the quarterfinals.
• Schalmont’s Isabella Borini became the first female track and athlete from her school to place in the Federation meet. Borini placed second among Division II competitors and fifth overall in the pentathlon. Devon Willis finished fourth in the boys triple jump, and MCA’s Jake Urys placed fourth among Division II runners in the boys 1,600-meter race.
