COLONIE — Whenever Shaker and Colonie meet on the field — the sport doesn’t matter — the intensity level already inherent in many high school athletic contests gets elevated a notch.
Even when the two teams are grossly mismatched, which does happen from time to time, both teams still play with a little more oomph knowing town bragging rights are at stake.
There was no mismatch on Thursday, May 5, when the two girls lacrosse teams took to the field, and while Colonie pulled out a hard-fought home win by a final score of 14-9.
Katherine Boardman had two goals and four assists to lead the Colonie offense while Avery Connolly had four goals and an assist and Bella Boardman had four goals. Shannon Coyle and Natalie Boardman each chipped in two goals to round out the Colonie offense.
Lauren McCullough scored five goals for Shaker while Olivia Papa and Lindsey McCullough scored two each. Cara Callichia had a goal and Jenna Pollicino had an assist for Shaker.
In goal Morgan Dense had eight saves for the Garnet Raiders and Emily Bette had five saves for Shaker.
Colonie will play at Averill Park on Tuesday, May 10, host Albany on Thursday, May 12, and round out the regular season at Niskayuna on Tuesday, May 17.
Shaker will play a non-league game at Wantagh on Saturday, May 7, play at Saratoga on Saturday, May 14, and play the final game of the regular season at Columbia on Monday, May 16.
