BETHLEHEM – The Section II champions Eagles hockey team jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Saturday, March 3, in the first round of the Division I, New York State Tournament.
And it was all downhill from there.
Massena, the Section X champs, scored the next three to take a 3-1 lead into the second period, and then three more in the second and two in the last to win the game 8-3 at the Bethlehem Area YMCA.
Thomas Liebold had two goals for Bethlehem, which won its first ever Section II crown on Tuesday Feb. 27, and Justin Chenaille had a goal and an assist.
Alex Breiner had 21 saves in goal in front of a sold out, largely home-team crowd.
On the way to its Section II crown, Bethlehem beat Adirondack 8-0, CBA 3-2 and LaSalle 7-0 in the championship game.
Massena will now play in the Frozen Four in Buffalo.
