Guilderland-Voorheesville, Saratoga Springs among opening day winners in girls swimming

Guilderland-Voorheesville defeated Bethlehem 98-83 in its season-opening girls swim meet Wednesday, Aug. 31, at Clayton A. Bouton High School in Voorheesville.

Stephanie Erickson won two individual events and was part of a winning relay for Guilderville. Erickson earned victories in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly.

Evanna Peng won the diving competition, and Jenna Mattson added a victory in the 500-yard freestyle for Guilderville. Jordyn Sommo finished first in the 100-yard backstroke.

Kathryn Sancilio earned victories in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles for Bethlehem. Emma Anderson was first in the 200-yard individual medley, and Megan Novak finished first in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Elsewhere, Saratoga Springs defeated Shaker 94-84 in Saratoga. Five people — Morgan Hoffman-Smith (200-yard individual medley), Taylor Patnode (50-yard freestyle), Felicity Ryan (diving), Victoria Breslin (100-yard butterfly) and Autumn Boxley (500-yard freestyle) — earned individual victories for Saratoga.

Emma McElrath led Shaker with wins in the 200- and 100-yard freestyles. Elizabeth Morgan finished first in the 100-yard backstroke, and Emily Yu took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Around the league, Ballston Spa defeated Albany 90-82, Mohonasen-Schalmont defeated Schenectady 97-67 and Niskayuna eased past Shenendehowa 105-76.
