ROTTERDAM — Bethlehem’s Samantha Gifford took first place in the triple jump at the Suburban Council Girls Track and Field Championships Wednesday, May 18, at Mohonasen High School.
Gifford posted a distance of 34 feet, 10.5 inches to place first. Guilderland’s Isabella Bruno was second with a distance of 34 feet, 5 inches, and Guilderland’s Matlyn Gross placed third with a distance of 34 feet, 3 inches. Bruno was also second in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 4 inches.
Shenendehowa and Saratoga Springs dominated the meet. Shen won the team title with 185 points, while Saratoga placed second with 163 points. Guilderland was a distant third with 66.5 points, followed by Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake (53 points), Bethlehem (51.5 points), Shaker (40.5 points) and Colonie (40 points).
Guilderland placed second behind Shen in the 400-meter relay with a time of 50.25 seconds. Shen won with a time of 49.58 seconds, while Shaker finished third with a time of 51.58 seconds.
Saratoga cruised to the 1,600-meter relay title with a time of 3:54.44. Colonie was second with a time of 4:02.55.
Bethlehem’s Julia Nugent finished third in the 200-meter dash and the 100-meter high hurdles. Colonie’s Allyson Oertel placed third in the 400-meter dash, and teammate Devanee Baskerville took third place in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
