Strong pitching and a big second inning helped the Albany Dutchmen defeat the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs 9-1 in Wednesday’s Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League game at Bob Bellizzi Field.
Matt Snyder and Grant DeWitt combined on a one-hitter to help the Dutchmen (17-17) get back to the .500 mark. Snyder pitched 7.1 innings and allowed only a third-inning RBI single by Tyler Heck while striking out five, and DeWitt collected the final five outs.
Albany’s first run came on Zach Remillard’s RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. The Dutchmen then tacked on four runs in the second inning, two of which came home on Nolan Gaige’s double.
Mike Triller — who had three hits in the game — singled home Jon Mestas in the bottom of the fourth inning to give Albany a 6-1 lead. Two innings later, Triller drove in two runs on a single to help seal the Dutchmen’s victory.
Gaige, Remillard, Adam Young and Jared Martin each added two hits for Albany, which kept pace with Oneonta and Glens Falls for the final playoff spot in the PGCBL. Glens Falls (19-17) defeated Watertown 14-4 to remain in sole possession of fourth place in the standings, while Oneonta (18-18) edged Elmira 3-1.
The Dutchmen travel to Glens Falls Thursday.
