Editor, The Spotlight;
We are active participants in both academic and extracurricular aspects of life in the Bethlehem Central School District community. This activity gives us an opportunity to work closely with the leadership of our schools. Based on numerous interactions, we can say our community benefits greatly from the leadership exhibited by Matt Downey and Joanne Cunningham as members of the Board of Education.
Our paths first crossed with Matt and his family over ten years ago on the softball fields where our daughters played. During his time on the Board, and more recently as its Chair, we have watched him make hard decisions about important issues after asking thoughtful questions and carefully considering the answers he receives.
In the year since being appointed to fill a vacancy on the Board, Joanne has demonstrated the same curiosity and diligence we seek in our students. With four children spread across the elementary, middle and high school levels, she has a unique vantage point. A point which is sharpened by her numerous volunteer activities, including her role with the Gymnastics booster club and Bethlehem Central Athletic Association.
Matt and Joanne both work professionally in and with New York State government. At a time when so much of what affects schools flows from the State, their expertise in the ways and means of state and local government is invaluable.
We don’t need to tell you how big the challenges are for our schools and the students they serve. We do want to thank Matt and Joanne for their tireless dedication to the Bethlehem school community and hope it continues for another three years.
