I have been working on the William McCarthy for Assembly Democratic primary campaign since May of this year. I’m new to the process of campaigning; however I had heard the stories about the “cut-throat” world of political campaigns. The reality was quite different. Once campaigning began, I quickly learned the truth about grassroots politics.
The people of the 109th district greeted me with kindness as I appeared at their doorstep on evenings and weekends during this, the hottest summer on record. Whether seeking a signature on a petition or simply distributing literature, I was usually met with a friendly face willing to listen while I introduced them to William McCarthy and his plans once in office. I listened while these same people shared their worries over taxes or their concerns regarding jobs and education.
While walking throughout the 109th I have witnessed the goodness of the people who, upon opening their doors, often offered a drink or to step inside to cool off. I also became acquainted with many four-legged residents of the district as they announced my arrival at the door and followed me on my way to the next home.
Volunteering for the McCarthy for Assembly Democratic campaign, I expected to work hard and learn about politics. What I did not expect was the kind of courtesy that I encountered while visiting throughout the 109th district. Grassroots politics at its finest – thank you.
