With Valentine’s Day being this week, I thought I would share this touching story because it come from the heart. They say that sometimes children are wiser than their years.
Well, I believe this to be true. I took my 10 year-old son who has Down syndrome and autism bowling today. He is non-verbal and a student at Wildwood School. A little girl came over to my son and gave him an orange balloon. Little did she know my son loves balloons…they are one of his favorite things in the world.
A little while later the girl came over again with a note which said “Do you want to be my friend? I want to be your friend.”
That says it all. If only we were all we as good at overlooking disabilities and treating the disabled as equals as that little girl. I smiled and told her my son can’t talk, but he would love to be her friend. She made both my and my son’s day by her nice gestures.
