Editor, The Spotlight:
New Scotland Residents Should be Disappointed
Thursday evening the New Scotland Town board met to discuss the town’s 2012 budget as well as their inability to permanently stabilize Wolf Hill, Countryman, and Krumkill roads after the damage from Hurricane Irene. Six weeks after the storm, Supervisor Tom Dolan and the rest of the town board have failed to find an alternative to closing these roads for an undefined length of time. I asked the board if they approached the Army Corp. of Engineers. While I am not sure if this was even an option, I received a very quiet “No” from supervisor Dolan. Their only response was FEMA and SEMA does not have any money. Residents should be appalled that our town officials failed to exhaust all avenues on an issue as serious as this one.
What is even more appalling is that the board decided to do nothing and continue to permanently close the roads even after hearing from affected local residents who were against the idea. New Scotland Highway Supervisor Darrel Duncan spoke against the idea of closing the road as well as emergency response staff stated that response times will increase, especially with the closure of Krumkill road which serves as a major thoroughfare. What a big disappointment!
This seems to be the trend with this elected town board. This board who has a super party majority was voted in based on their promise to legislate a ban on a big box store. That has not happened. They promised a strategic town wide plan, that hasn’t happened. Now they don’t want to do anything about some damaged roads. Really?
Actions speak louder than words and right now our town board’s actions are loud and clear. That is why I’m running for town board. I want to bring accountability back to our town government. I want to utilize my business experience to get things done and to get our town back in order. I do not want to be another disappointment.
