Guilderland Public Library news: Take Your Child to the Library

Spotlight Newsroom by Spotlight Newsroom
February 2, 2022
in Blogs, Community Blogs
Reading Time: 4 mins read

Our week-long “Celebration of Libraries” kicks off Saturday, Feb. 5 with a weather theme, encouraging kids to explore several fascinating facets of meteorology.  Whether or not weather stokes your curiosity, we’ll have something for everyone the first full week of February, through Friday, Feb. 11.

Think your child is ready to obtain their very first library card?  We’d love to sign them up as an official library patron (with a parent or legal guardian present).  We’ve simplified the registration process, and our staff at the check out desk always looks forward to welcoming new card-carrying library patrons, of all ages!

Virtual Storytime

We’re switching things up a bit for our Live Virtual Storytimes, based on your feedback.  Starting in February, we’ll meet via Zoom for a lively interactive storytime alternating Thursday mornings and Tuesday afternoons.  Sign up on the Events tab of https://guilderlandlibrary.org/ for Thursday, Feb. 3, at 10:30 a.m. and/or Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 4 p.m.  You’ll find ideas on props you can create at home to make the experience more interactive as we read books, sing songs and enjoy a lively time together!  Storytime is ideal for children ages infant-age 5.

Valentine’s Project

Make someone’s day by making valentines!  Community Caregivers will distribute your creations to their clients.  Your colorful greetings make a difference, lifting the spirits of local residents who could use a boost.  All ages are encouraged to get creative – make it a family project!  Original or repurposed cards should be no larger than 5 x 7, and no envelope is needed.  Drop them off in the designated box in our lobby until Sunday, Feb. 6, allowing ample time to distribute. Thank you for participating!

Talk to Someone

For our next Night Owls Online meetup Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., we’re reading “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone:  A Therapist, Her Therapist, and Our Lives Revealed,” by Lori Gottlieb.  This bestseller is a candid, poignant and often humorous exploration of the human condition, from both the professional and patient perspective.  Register on the Events tab of our website for the link to participate.

Genealogy Assistance

Start researching your family tree, or continue making progress on your journey.  Professional genealogist Lisa Dougherty is available Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 6 to 8 p.m. for customized consultations on a virtual basis. Please register on the Events tab of our website to receive the meeting link. For more information, visit:  http://www.upstatenygenealogy.com.

Green Reads

We’re diving into the fascinating deep blue sea for our next Green Reads online meetup Thursday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. with “The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration into the Wonder of Consciousness,” by Sy Montgomery.

— Luanne Nicholson

This work was lauded as a finalist for the National Book Award for Nonfiction, a New York Times bestseller, and a starred pick by Booklist, Kirkus and Library Journal.  This program is offered in collaboration with Albany Guardian Society.  Be sure to reserve your spot on the Events tab of our website, as there is limited availability.

Attracting Birds

We have a special Valentine’s Day treat in store that can help make each day a little sweeter: tips for attracting birds to your backyard.  This virtual program on Mon. Feb. 14 at 9:30 a.m. covers the basics, including types of bird feeders and feed, plantings, and shelter options.  Stunning photographs will show many common and rare bird species found throughout the northeast. This program is presented in conjunction with Albany Guardian Society by Scott Stoner and Denise Hackert-Stoner, directors for the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club, owners of Naturelogues, and professional photographers for numerous publications.  Please register on the Events tab of our website.

Tech & Résumé Help

Consult with computer coach Robin from the comfort of home to help you get the most out of your Apple device.  She can also assist with the Learning Express tool on our website to help you craft a winning résumé.  Sign up on the Events tab of our website for your 1:1 virtual hour-long appointment on Mon. Feb. 14 or 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Browsing Hours

Curbside pick up in our lobby is available with 24-hours notice by calling 518.456.2400 ext. 2.  Masks are required for ages two and up.  GPL policies based on current COVID conditions are outlined in our Pandemic Operations Plan, accessible on our website.  Current hours are:  Monday – Thursday 9:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.; Friday 9:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.; Saturday 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; Sunday 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
